Joe Finan

Joe Finan

Joe was born in 1927 in Butler, Pennsylvania. He served in the United States Navy 1944-45 and attended Carnegie Tech. Joe first signed on at WISR in Butler, PA in 1949 and for nearly 60 years, never stopped talking.

He began his Northeast Ohio broadcast career as the first TV weatherman in Ohio. In 1951 Joe forecast the weather on WNBK-TV, Channel 4 which would soon become KYC-Channel 3. While at KYW-TV, Finan worked alongside Cleveland Broadcast legends, sportscasters Bob Neal and Jim Graner and preceded weatherman Dick Goddard.

While on TV, Joe was also on KYC radio and did the first format “Top Forty” show in the market. Joe left Cleveland for Denver where he was Program Manager and part owner of KTLN. He returned to Cleveland in 1968 as the morning man on WIXY-1260 and established the Ohio School of Broadcasting. After selling his interest in the school, Finan returned to Denver as Vice President and General Manager of KTLK-Welcome Radio.

Joe again returned to the North Coast and WHK. While at WHK, he worked with Award for Excellence in Broadcasting honoree, ‘Emperor’ Joe Mayer. After 10 years at WHK, he Joined WNIR-FM, “The Talk of Akron”, in 1984 and remained there till his retirement in 2004. Finan came out of retirement for his last radio gig on WARF-AM 1350 in Akron, as a midday talk show host, from February to October 2006.
